Why Shopping at Marks and Spencer made me go head over heels in love with it

UK high street brand Marks and Spencer has reportedly hard hit during recession. In recent times, they have experimented and forayed in to a lot of earlier untested domains and succeeded.

Starting from implementing strategies to coming up with innovative products, it was one of the few brands that took the hit and came out stronger than ever.

Being a sensible and patient shopper, I usually don’t go over board when it comes to splurging. C’mon who doesn’t need a bit of splurging now and then to feel inspired provided you have every other financial goal moderately covered.

Since my late teens to my early twenties, in a time frame spanning 6 years, I have had walked past the M&S store front glancing casually but never felt inclined enough to walk into the store. Why? It seemed unvarying every time and there was nothing that induced me to walk in and take a look around.

A few weeks ago, something changed, their new collection had arrived. Something was attractive about the store front displays, maybe they changed it around to have a more spread out layout. Anyway, the end result was, I decided to drop in and look around. I guess it’s the simplest tweaks that make the most difference.

Except a few really pretty pieces in their clothing line, the rest of it was the same cuts and the same styles. I liked how the store smelt though, and that made me linger around. It was relaxing and slightly intoxicating.

Step 1. Attraction . Check!

It was only a matter of time before I was completely absorbed in to their skin-care section. What drew me in was the wonderfully shelved, organised and well stocked up display. I like displays that have  a lot to choose from and not a whole store with scantily dressed shelves.

Step 2. A Comfortable experience. Check!

I love the fact that they had so many samples readily available and wonderful sales staff who were willing to help you out. There was no impatience or coaxing or the unnecessary ‘this is good for you’ and stuff.

Step 3. The Feel Good Factor. Check!

NOT TESTED ON ANIMALS. This gets huge brownie points.

MADE IN THE UK. I don’t buy stuff made in China.

Containers are made of (part recycled) RECYCLABLE PLASTIC AND RECYCLABLE GLASS.

AMAZING PACKAGING AND A GREAT RANGE OF PRODUCTS TO CHOOSE FROM.

NOT PRICED EXORBITANTLY. This helps when you are trying it out for the first time and can spend over a variety of stuff rather than 1 or 2.

THEY DELIVER ON QUALITY. SO, NO SECOND THOUGHTS ON THAT DEPARTMENT.

Step 4. The decision to buy. Check!

Half of the mind is made up due to the feel good factors listed above. The rest of the decision is based on the fact that I like price I will pay when compared to the next best thing. It turns turns out that all the stuff I bought at the store is actually less than an exorbitant garment that I can easily find a dupe for. It much more satisfying to go out scouring through local stores and markets with your friends than bust all your cash in a wardrobe full of exorbitant pieces especially when you are young.

Step 5. Walk out happily and don’t let remorse over take you. Check!

When you leave your sensibilities at the door for  a change..

and when you do not need the stuff, you are just buying it to make yourself feel better….

I think I managed this as well. I was on a shopping ban for several months while I just focused on certain important things in life and carefully planned every purchase and waited for the best deals to come my way. Not always, but I did succeed 7 out of 10 times.
