Before I go into the nitty-gritty of the process (and I plan on doing so over the next several weeks), I would first like to acquaint the new reader to my background and what propelled me into starting a small business and growing it to a level that has enabled me to hire people and focus on the bigger picture.
I grew up in a small city that was surrounded by hills and it instilled in me a love for the hills and a sustainable lifestyle. When I moved to a big city at the age of 17 , it was no longer possible for me to follow the same lifestyle that I had been used to as a child. A few years later, after receiving my Masters Degree in Science (with a specialisation in genomics and cytogenetics; as I wanted to study genetics since high school) I moved out with a job to a small city and created a sustainable, minimalist lifestyle along with my wonderful room-mate who had similar ideas about lifestyle like I did. We made a good salary at our first full time job after leaving university and were very happy to see your bank balance grow month after month, a situation that would eventually lead to complete financial independence but I wanted it “now”. I didn’t want to spend years of my life at a job and at a place that did not provide any spectacular mobility. We both left our jobs during the same time; me for the want of adventure and excitement, she for the want of a big city life where she grew up. We both returned and while she settled in to another job, I moved towards the more adventurous lifestyle of spontaneous travelling and turning my side business (that I had started back when I was a university student) in to a full time income generating venture while working simultaneously on location independent news/media blogging jobs.
The few months that followed after left my job I also learned 2 programming languages, traveled, worked and built my business and left for the United States for a Masters Degree in Biotechnology; while living a life I always wanted: owning my business, having some great people around me to help me tide over difficulties and a staff of 4 helping me run my business.
I planned my finances in a way (earning, saving and investing since the age of 17) so that it pays my rent and utilities indefinitely from the interest generated from the capital, ie., by growing my passive income streams. One day, I hope to own farmland and a Bio-energy business but right now I am content with traveling and living my life at different places and learning through the various adventures.
Here are some detailed (and some of the best articles) shared in this blog including the ones that reverberate to a sustainable, common sense lifestyle.
