I recently received a copy of “Knight of Light” by Deirdra Eden to review. Frankly, though I like the action -fantasy genre within reasonable limits, just the vast majority of the books on the subject sometimes makes it a very difficult task to pick up the one book you would really like to read. This book seemed like one and though we do not take on book reviews very often, we decided to give this one a try.
Read on for the review by Rhea.. It might turn out to be a good addition to your winter reading list after all!
Knight of Light is a fantasy, supernatural book written by Deirdra Eden and she takes us on a journey of a young girl called Auriella who flees her village when she was accused of witchcraft. Her adventures begin after she rescues herself from angry villagers and then meets blood thirsty wolves and a cruel witch named Hazella. Thinking herself saved, she stays on with Hazella and then later on comes to know about The Shadow Legion and their King.
Here’s the official blurb:
All the training in Heaven couldn’t prepare me for the war on earth, nor for the love, loss, or loneliness humans feel. There are things worse than death, and every last one of them is hunting people like us. Even though we all feel human at times, we must remember, we are not them, we are their watchers.
In England, 1270 A.D., Auriella (pronounced yurr-ee-ella) flees her village after being accused of witchcraft. Pursued by nightmarish creatures, she struggles to accept the truth about her humanity. Filled with fairies, dwarves, pixies, dragons, demons, and monsters, Knight of Light is an enthralling tale that will capture the imaginations of readers young and old.
The Watchers Series; has been described as Braveheart meets Supernatural. The mythology for the series is based on many theological texts from dozens of sects with correlating themes. Ancient writings include the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Traditional Apocrypha, the Pearl of Great Price and the Kabbalah. The Watchers are supernatural beings in human form whose duty it is to protect and guard mankind from the armies of darkness. Unfortunately, as the Book of Enoch mentions, some of these Watchers go bad.
Although the mythology is based on these texts, Deirdra Eden’s; The Watcher’s Series; is written in a traditional fairytale style with a young girl’s discovery of incredible, but dangerous powers within herself, a cast of humorous side-kicks, a quest for greater self-discovery and purpose, and villains of epic proportions.

We read the story and experience the adventures through Auriella’s eyes and feelings. The story is of how a young girl who had nothing and was insecure rose and faced her enemies with courage and strength. Her character seemed a little weak and clueless at first but later on we see her mature more in terms of her feelings and will power. However her character seemed to change abruptly in the story. There was no flow in that change as the time span of certain events was long. Those long gaps and the sudden leaps of Auriella’s character were a downside. I would have enjoyed it even more if the story had a gripping suspense in it.
Every character is unique and I developed mixed feelings for them. The characters needed more strength and depth. The story itself seemed a little too rushed and had alarmingly quick outcomes. Some parts of the story lacked depth and suspense which is very necessary in a supernatural fantasy book. I did not like how the story always had quick results for everything (the adoption, the deaths and the escapes).
What I liked the most about this book was that it had several of my favourite fairytale characters such as, fairies, witches, dragons, bad wolves, dwarves and powerful villains and heroes integrated in one story. We have fallen in love with Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit books thanks to their several sensational and unusual supernatural characters like dragons, goblins, trolls, spiders, unicorns. A fantasy book, in my opinion, is never truly gobsmacking without the quick and cunning schemes of gnomes, or the savvy pirates, dragons and wolves or any other supernatural creature .In that aspect, Knight of Light shone! The characters were savvy, unpredictable and absolutely adorable at the same time! With every twist and turn in Auriella’s journey we get to meet different fairytale characters and their unique characteristics. The dwarf and fairy companion of Auriella won my heart.
It is a lovely tale of friendship, hope and faith written in a simple way so that each scene is visual for the reader. It is appropriate for adults and children.
It will be a wonderfully fun read for children and adults alike.
The length of the book is pretty average and can be downloaded easily on kindle and nook.
