A Quick Guide To a Weekend in Atlanta, Georgia

A week ago I was invited for a spontaneous road trip to Atlanta with friends. Owning to the amazing weather the weekend had to offer, I agreed at once. We rented an Audi Q5 and started from Charlotte on Friday evening. Since we had plans of sightseeing and partying all on the same day, I packed up my favorite travel bag, my new Thule backpack with day wear, party outfit, makeup, hair straighter, jewelry, snacks, candy and everything else I could fit in for the weekend. We will be reviewing the Thule backpack for you in a future post!

We had quite a bit of delay on the highway that held us up considerably but we managed to get in Atlanta downtown before midnight. After checking in to our rooms at Hyatt midtown, we quickly changed and headed to the hotel bar for a couple of old-fashioned with some spicy chicken wings. After striking up a wonderful conversation with the lady serving our drinks, which by the way, were really well done, we got an idea about the best late-night eateries nearby.

If you are looking for a place with a twist, go to the Vortex with their cool, retro ambiance and good music, good service and good food. Their sandwiches are heaven and if you want something really hot and spicy to satiate your late night hunger pangs, Hell’s Fury with their special habanero sauce is the way to go. We had a couple of Jägermeister shots with another round of old fashioned. We headed back to the room and called it a day.

Next morning, we headed out for brunch and explored the neighborhood a bit. We were super lucky to have the weather stay on the bright and pleasant side while we strolled around the city blocks. We chose to brunch at the West Egg Café. Their menu is stupendous and we could imagine the 45 minute wait for a table! While a part of the group waited around and soaked up the sun, the girls headed out for some photos and window shopping!

We strolled into a high-end consignment store while waiting for our brunch table at the West End Cafe!

At this point, I tried a couple of ways to get rid of the hangover from last night and eventually had to flush down an Advil into my system before heading over to the Georgia aquarium. If you are planning a trip there, make sure you catch the Dolphin show, the sea lion show and Sharks by BBC earth that they are playing right now for a cool 4D experience. Don’t forget to check out the huge tank that houses several large sea creatures and get your flippers on for an exclusive dive with the Whale sharks! Georgia Aquarium is the only place on earth that boasts of an diving experience the largest fish that is also very gentle by nature!

We were done by around 7 in the evening and headed back to the hotel to get some rest before Saturday night’s party. We grabbed some quesadillas on our way back. We quickly took a shower and settled in for a short nap. By around 10pm, we were all dressed and gathered for a pre-game with a few Jägermeister shots. By now, you might have probably figured that Jägermeister is the preferred pre-game drink of the party of people I was with. We headed over to Opera House, a nightclub created out of renovating an opera house and claims to be Atlanta’s best nightclub with its high, vaulted ceilings and massive chandeliers. The theme was Bombay lounge and it was truly electrifying music. There wasn’t a minute of dullness while we were there. We had so much fun that we left only when the club was closing which was at 3am owing to daylight saving time change that Sunday! We headed back to the hotel, grabbed some snacks and plonked into bed.

We checked out the next morning and headed to Madras Mantra for brunch on our way back to Charlotte. The restaurant was voted among Atlanta’s best 50 and with good reason. They had an awesome, all-vegetarian buffet layout complete with miniature idlis and homemade paneer. The desserts and the coffee was supreme as well.

The drive back was a somber affair with casual, breezy music playing in the background and an occasional anecdote from last evening’s party!

Tell us about your experience in Atlanta! If you live there, tell us about the place we should definitely check out the next time we drive into that gorgeous city!!
